NHL 26: EA Promises the Most Authentic Hockey Yet
Are you ready for the next NHL season to begin? If you’re a fan of any team aside from the Edmonton Oilers, your answer is probably “yes.” If you’re an Oilers fan, it’s okay to keep hiding from the world. EA Sports is ready, and NHL 26 is right around the corner. The latest in their annual hockey-simulation franchise, NHL 26 boasts a few new features that look to build upon the groundwork laid with NHL 25, while polishing the overall presentation to provide a more true-to-life experience. Is this the NHL game fans have been waiting for? Time will tell. Until then, come along as we detail this year’s gameplay innovations and Be-A-Pro improvements ahead of NHL 26’s September 12th release date.

If anything is going to make or break NHL 26, it’ll be the refined “ICE-Q” system, now dubbed “ICE-Q 2.0”. NHL 25 introduced ICE-Q, improving the AI’s responsiveness to dynamic situations. This would make teammates more reliable on both the offensive and defensive ends. Admittedly, it didn’t feel as prevalent as EA had hoped it would. Players would often be left scratching their heads in frustration as their wingers would be out of place or their d-men would be made fools of during routine plays.
Dynamic Data
ICE-Q 2.0 hopes to alleviate these issues. For the first time in the franchise’s history, NHL 26 will implement real-time EDGE data. The same data is used by teams during actual games to judge things like shot speed, skating acceleration, and save types. This means that advanced analytics used by real teams will shape how NHL 26 feels. EA Sports stresses that this will make individual players feel more like their real-life counterparts, especially the NHL’s elite like Connor McDavid and Nathan Mackinnon.
Millions of data points will be utilized to fine-tune the experience, constantly being updated throughout the season to ensure NHL 26 replicates the real world as closely as possible. For example, if, say, Alex Ovechkin were to replace his Gatorade intake with nothing but Russian potato vodka, you’re going to feel it every time he takes the ice. Undoubtedly, ICE-Q 2.0 represents the most exciting of NHL 26’s upgrades. Naturally, it’ll be interesting to see how each player holds up throughout the 2025-26 season.

Goalie Overhaul
I’m excited to see what ICE-Q 2.0 does for goaltenders, too. EA has advised that goalies are getting a significant overhaul in NHL 26, with better reaction times to rebounds and deflections. We were shown an example of this, where Sergei Bobrovsky makes an initial save high up on his shoulder, deflecting the puck up into the air. In previous iterations, goalies would lose track of the puck in these situations, leading to soft goals and thrown controllers. But in our demonstration, Bobrovsky immediately knew that the puck was floating above him and adjusted his positioning to accurately deal with the rebound.
Speaking of accurate situations, Be-A-Pro has been reworked from the ground up. It will now better represent the ups and downs of an NHL career. NHL 26 offers full control over your player’s journey, starting as a youngster vying for his place in the World Juniors, to the anxieties of navigating the NHL draft, to becoming a superstar of your favorite franchise that can rejuvenate a city’s interest in hockey. Tons of new cutscenes, characters, challenges, and storylines have been developed for Be-A-Pro. This, without a doubt, makes it the most considerable upgrade that the mode has ever seen.
Better Days for Be-A-Pro
Most importantly, in NHL 26’s Be-A-Pro mode, choices matter. Decisions made both on and off the ice will significantly impact the trajectory of your career. It’ll be your job to navigate scenarios that aren’t always cut-and-dry, doing your best to develop your player into the kind of asset you want them to be. Have you got your eyes set on glory, or simply going out there and punishing the competition? Do you want fans to love you, or could you not care less about what they think? These questions will be answered come September.

“NHL 26 is the most true-to-life experience we’ve ever built,” advises Mike Inglehart, Creative Director at EA Sports. “It was created with fans who crave hockey authenticity in mind – the ones who live and breathe the game and know how it should feel. From deeper gameplay detail to the biggest Be-A-Pro update since NHL 21, everything we’ve done this year is about bringing them closer to the teams they love and the moments that define the NHL.”
Is This the Year?
Here’s the thing: EA Sports promises revolutionary updates to the NHL franchise every year. The truth is, they rarely deliver. Scroll the NHL games subreddit for five minutes. You’ll understand why a massive chunk of the fanbase has been displeased with the franchise for so long. EA has a lot of work to do if it wants to regain the trust of its players. I desperately want to love the NHL games again, but I’ll be cautiously approaching NHL 26.
Thank you for keeping it locked on COGconnected.
