Life is Strange: Reunion Preview
Each iteration in the Life is Strange franchise has told a bespoke, emotional tale centred on a poignant protagonist. 2024’s Double Exposure saw the return of series original, Max Caulfield. Older and living in a different town, she aimed to leave behind the events of Arcadia Bay and forge a new path. With an entirely new cast, the game delivered an unforgettable supernatural story that extended Max’s journey while opening fresh narrative threads. Reunion is a direct sequel, marking a first for the series. Will the reintroduction of Chloe bring the saga to a fitting conclusion, or will it feel like a retread of old ground?
The preview event offered approximately 90 minutes of gameplay from an early portion of the game. After a brief video setting up the story, you see the campus ablaze and your friend Moses trapped on a balcony. To save him and the school, you rewind time to uncover the cause of the fire and prevent the tragedy. It’s a compelling premise, providing a clear focus for the events that follow. This goal frames every conversation with the game’s rich cast of characters, offering further insight into the fire’s possible origins.
Time to Shine
Max’s ability to distort time is used effectively. After initial conversations with her peers, you can rewind and open new avenues based on the information you’ve learned. One instance of this involves Amanda. Nervous about debuting her comedy routine at an open mic night, she starts to buckle when a heckler pipes up. After a less-than-satisfying first show, Max decides to rewind and change the course of events. This leads to conversations with the heckler, giving you options to shift the outcome. While it’s a small example, it shows the potential for this mechanic to become a powerful gameplay device with a much larger impact.
Fan favorite Chloe returns, and you can choose from several options regarding the finale of the first game to shape your story. Out of curiosity, I selected that she had died at the end of the original adventure to see how it would be addressed. While the game does offer an explanation, it feels like this thread will be explored more deeply later on. The chemistry between Chloe and Max radiates, making each interaction a joy to watch. With Chloe seeking Max out after suffering nightmares of Max killing her, it’s clear this dynamic is loaded with tension. It’ll be interesting to see where this story arc leads.
A great talker, Chloe can use “Backtalk”, a mechanic that sees her argue and insult others to get her own way. It not only adds extra layers to conversations but also reinforces her rebellious streak, strengthening her bond with the player. Dialogue choices can now flip between the two protagonists, meaning you’ll select responses for both of them, further shaping the story to your liking.
Cozy and Cinematic
In addition to its well-structured narrative and deep, richly drawn cast of characters, the game also looks fantastic. There’s a high level of polish and a cinematic quality that has long defined the franchise, and that continues in Reunion. The voice acting is among the best in the industry, with strong performances across the board that perfectly communicate the characters and their relationships with one another. Together, these elements pull you in completely, making it easy to lose yourself in Max and Chloe’s world once again.
Although the narrative is moving in interesting directions, some reused locations make the experience feel a little too familiar at times. Hopefully, when the game releases in March, we’ll see a wider variety of environments to better complement its strong premise. As it stands, though, I can’t wait to dive back in and see where the story goes. Based on the preview event, we’re in for a wild ride.
