F.E.A.R. Online Hands-on (PC) Preview – Alma’s Back Scaredy Cats!

She’s  back!

No, not the girl from Poltergeist but little Alma Wade from the F.E.A.R videogame series. This time she is no longer content to invade your body but also those of your friends over the internet.

On October 4th, Canadian Online Gamers was fortunate enough to be invited to a Press Event of the free-to-play mutiplayer shooter from Aeria Games. This is what they had to say about the game:

‘In F.E.A.R. Online, tensions reach a boiling point as the F.E.A.R. task force investigates Armacham Technology Corporation’s unsettling experiments. With several team combat modes spanning more than ten ominous maps, the game is packed with chilling details. The storyline continues in cooperative scenarios that detail the terrifying occurrences surrounding the F.E.A.R. team, in parallel to the events of F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin. Up to four players can team up and fight for their lives against both hostile Armacham personnel and hideous monsters lurking around every corner.’

So welcome to Fairport. A great place to live until Armacham Technology Corporation(ATC), a multi-billion dollar conglomerate that developed technology for military purposes came along. Then strange things began to happen. Missing children. Strange creatures in night. The military was called in and everything went totally FUBAR. Half the city was levelled by a nuclear blast. And a small girl with powerful mental abilities, aka Alma Wade, escaped.

In F.E.A.R. Online you and your friends represent a new military unit called in to clean up the mess. Like Alma, your unit also has psionic abilities. Things have gone to hell and it’s your job to clean things up.

F.E.A.R. Online features:
  • Cooperative Story Mode
  • Multiplayer gameplay with over ten different PvP maps where you can shoot it out against both rival players and horrifying deadly monsters.
  • Clans
  • Traditional and Psionic weapons
  • Factions
  • Two Player Vs Environment Maps supporting 2 – 4 players
  • Ten Player Vs Player Maps for up to 16 players – 8 vs 8 matchups with the following modes: Team Deathmatch, Team Demolition, Knife Mode, Armored Front, and Soul King

Soul King mode is intriguing. You get to play as a ghost where you can possess enemies. This gives you new abilities with the goal to collecting as many fresh souls as you can.

In our Press Event preview we got to check out the shooter and some of the maps.  You can check out our thoughts in this video:

The game has gone Open Beta starting the weekend of October 11th as Aeria Games enters the final push to lock the game down. If you are a fan of the F.E.A.R. franchise and are intrigued by a MP shooter with lots of gore that mixes traditional and psionic weapons all bundled together in a free package then follow the link – F.E.A.R.
