These next three titles are arguably interchangeable based on one’s personal preference.
3. Horizon: Zero Dawn
Set to release very soon, Horizon: Zero Dawn is an action RPG set in a post-post-apocalyptic world where mechanized dinosaurs and creatures roam the land. The game is set in an open world, with elements reminiscent of titles such as Batman, Uncharted, and Assassin’s Creed. The game also has many RPG elements which include different paths in completing quests, a skill tree leveling system, dialogue wheels, and many side quests. Horizon: Zero Dawn appears to be the front runner thus far for best action RPG this year, and has the potential to finish the year as the best RPG and maybe even best game.
2. Persona 5
For those unfamiliar with the Persona series, it is a series that is part of the larger Megami Tensei franchise, but features more JRPG elements. Chief among them being that the game features a day-night cycle, a calendar year, going to school, extracurricular activities, developing character relationships, and most importantly exploring dungeons and battling Shadows. The game features the series familiar turn-based battle system as well as various Persona to persuade to your side. Persona 5 is without a doubt the biggest JRPG currently slated to come out this year.
1. Mass Effect: Andromeda
It has been about 5 years, and I think the world is ready for the next Mass Effect title. Admittedly, I was a bit skeptical about Mass Effect: Andromeda because I could not envision where the series would head after the events of Mass Effect 3, but I have definitely warmed up to the idea of Andromeda. Perhaps the most interesting aspect of this game to me is a new universe where nothing is familiar save for your crew and the title of the series. Those familiar with the series know what to expect, but newcomers will definitely be in for a great experience as well. Like Horizon: Zero Dawn, Mass Effect: Andromeda has the potential to be one of the best games of the year.
Honorable Mention: Vampyr
The Honorable Mention goes to Vampyr, a third-person action RPG that puts you in the role of a doctor in Victorian Era London. The kicker? You are now also a vampire. The game provides an interesting dynamic in which you can balance your calling as a doctor with your new bloodthirsty nature. The game takes place in a semi-open world environment with features such as the ability to complete the game without taking a life, and being invited into a household before being able to enter. We will definitely be keeping an eye on this title
