The Bad
Crime Boss: Rockay City
Crime Boss: Rockay City is a roguelite first person shooter. It’s designed to look like Grand Theft Auto, but it comes across as an imitation of Grand Theft Auto clones like Payday or Saint’s Row. It mostly comes across as uninspired. Its story and characters are bland, and its gameplay is buggy. Our reviewer found “first-person roguelike mechanics in a narrative-focused game is an intriguing concept”, but Crime Boss: Rockay City’s execution was off the mark. It’s one of the two poorly scoring games in The Three Best (and Worst) Video Games from June 2023.
Dordogne

Dordogne is a narrative-driven third person adventure game. It has some elements of point-and-click adventure games. It has a gorgeous art style, a compelling narrative, and a healthy dose of charm. The problem with Dordogne is that it has a very slow pace. And a lot of the game’s tasks feel like needless padding. Despite being in The Bad section of The Three Best (and Worst) Video Games from June 2023, Dordogne still scored a 70. Our reviewer noted that “those who enjoy narrative-driven games will fall in love with Dordogne”.
Loop8: Summer of Gods
Loop8: Summer of Gods has an extremely compelling Sci-Fi narrative, about the world being destroyed by monsters, and frequently reborn. It starts very strong. On paper, this visual novel/ JRPG hybrid sounds like a great idea, but the JRPG elements were awful. They were way too thin. As a visual novel, Loop8: Summer of Gods could have been excellent, but JRPG fans will hate its shallow gameplay, and repetitive nature. Despite its issues, our reviewer “loved how the story tied into the gameplay structure”.
