3 Up, 3 Down – May 2019

Summer’s finally here, or, depending on where you live, summer is being held hostage by the last remnant of bad weather. Either way, the heat is slowly creeping, and what better way is there to avoid the outdoors than to sequester yourself away in a dark, air-conditioned room? With last month’s releases being Mortal Kombat 11 and other games of such quality, who can blame anyone who shuns the sun? If you want the best recommendations and the biggest to avoid for the month of May—so you know which games to drag into your dank cave with you—stay tuned for the three best and three worst of May 2019.

Outer Wilds

The Best

A Plague Tale: Innocence Review

A Plague Tale: Innocence developed by Asobo Studios presents a story about a young woman named Amicia and her struggle to keep herself and her brother alive in a France plagued by war, tumult, and, well, the plague. While the stealth mechanics are sometimes creaky or inconsistent, the overall aesthetic of the gripping narrative and the engaging graphics and gameplay make it a game worth checking out. Our reviewer said, “It’s a title I couldn’t stop playing and could easily be a top sleeper hit of the year.”

Outer Wilds

Outer Wilds is a game about science and discovery. This could mean anything for its gameplay and its enjoyment, but Mobius Digital crafts a compelling gameplay experience revolving around space exploration. Saying too much about Outer Wilds might spoil it for people who play it, but without going too much into detail, as our reviewer says, “Outer Wilds does what it sets out to do so well that I can give it no higher praise than say it’s a must-have game for any of us interested in outer space and science fiction.”

Blood & Truth

Blood & Truth is A PSVR experience developed by SIE London Studio that results in our top rated game of the month. Packed full of tongue-in-cheek action movie clichés that harken back to the best of pop culture in the last decades, Blood & Truth offers a fun, fast-paced adventure. Following Ryan Marks, a tough, Cockney former special forces veteran as he solves a crime turf war involving his own family, the production values and graphics are top-notch, and this holds true for the gameplay, the sound design, and the voice acting as well. No wonder our reviewer said, “Blood & Truth is a bloody, thrilling ride from start to finish and in my opinion the best PSVR title yet… excellently crafted and brilliantly written, Blood & Truth is a must-play for any PSVR owner.”
