The Naval Warfare of Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii

The Naval Warfare is a Blast in Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii

The franchise is known for its street brawls and cinematic combat, however, Pirate Yakuza adds something completely into the mix. With Majima at the helm of the voyage, you will take part in naval warfare. Will the chaos of ship-to-ship combat complement the series’ signature melee action, or will it chart a bold new course for Like a Dragon?

As Captain Majima, you command the Goromaru. With your trusty crewmates, you sail the seas in search of treasure in an incredible adventure around Hawaii. As you’d expect, the seas are treacherous with enemy ships dotted throughout. Due to this, you must use your skills to sink your opponents and ensure the safety of your crew.

Trimming the Fat

Like other mini-games that Ryu Ga Gotoku embed in their releases, there’s a wonderful simplicity that imbues the naval combat. You can shoot foes with guns located at the front of the ship, swing the vessel around to unleash devastating canons and even board ships to initiate traditional combat segments. The arcade-style approach makes these moments an absolute blast which makes each voyage a joy.

As you progress, you’ll be able to upgrade your ship. Put in the money and you’ll be able to improve your weapons and sails. In addition to enhancing your ship’s performance, you can also customize its appearance so anyone sailing can instantly notice you. With the ability to also recruit new crew members, it is a surprisingly deep component of the game and helps to further differentiate it from other releases in the franchise.

Secrets Ahoy!

In addition to open sea combat, there are also plenty of opportunities to explore. You will come across hidden treasure, secret areas and more on the small map. Getting across the area is also made easy with designated spots that act as wind tunnels to move you quickly from A to B. With resources on these tracks, it’s worth traveling on these routes so each trip gives you everything you need to improve your vessel.

No one expected Ryu Ga Gotoku to bring naval combat to the Like a Dragon series—but somehow, it works! With arcade-style mechanics and deep customization options, sailing the seas is a surprising delight. Whether you’re a longtime fan or a newcomer, this standalone adventure has something for everyone.
