The Ugly
1 – Destiny’s Sword
PAX Online was full of fun classic indies, brand new games, and a taste of upcoming titles, with Destiny’s Sword being the latter. While the gameplay of Destiny’s Sword was decent, the menus and UI were nightmarish on PC and seemed designed for mobile. The game’s micro-transactions seem more fleshed out than the rest of the game, and it seems inaccurately labeled as an MMO. With such brilliant minds behind Destiny’s Sword, the potential seemed more limitless than the reality.
2 – Inkulinati
The strategy elements of Inkulinati are complex and enjoyable, and the humor is endless, but the art is visually off-putting. Many indies these days swap out Unreal Engine 4 quality graphics for the classic feel of 16-bit or 32-bit, but Inkulinati utilizes some of the roughest visuals from classic art. The game is a good time, and we appreciate what Yaza Games is trying to accomplish with this indie title, but some people are going to look at this one and immediately pass it by after judging a book by its cover.
3 – Steam Centric
While we were already existing Steam members who were logging on to the client regularly, it should be noted that PAX Online was most prominently featured through the client. The PC platform is full of various clients, and in terms of reach, Steam is the best stage to put PAX on. The problem with limiting the most content to a client was less about accessibility, anyone can make a Steam account, but it’s unnecessary ammo in the Steam vs Epic Games Store platform war. If the same content was available on both platforms during PAX Online, more people would’ve engaged with the content which is what matters most.
