Ashes of the Damned Shaping Into The Zombies Experience TranZit Always Wanted to Be
Full disclosure – I only got about 30 minutes with Black Ops 7 Zombies and its flagship map “Ashes of the Damned” at Call of Duty NEXT in Las Vegas. That being said, it was enough to get seriously jazzed about the new Zombies map coming at launch. If you’ve ever slogged through the foggy roads of TranZit in Black Ops 2, you’ll know exactly why this map feels like a spiritual successor. Yet it’s better in almost every way. This isn’t just a walk down memory lane. It’s TranZit reborn, refined, and expanded.
Treyarch promises this is their “most ambitious Zombies experience ever”. That may seem like just some marketing fluff, but based on my quick playtime, I don’t think it is. ‘Ashes of the Damned’ is a sprawling, huge, interconnected map set in the Dark Aether.
Before I get ahead of myself, I should mention that this Zombie package offers a ton of content. It features a massive, open exploration zone; a player-controlled vehicle (the Wonder Vehicle, aka “Ol’ Tessie”); Survival Maps returning for the first time since Black Ops 2; a punishing new “Cursed Mode” for hardcore fans; and new Wonder Weapons, enemies, traps, and traversal options.
Ol’ Tessie: The Heart of the Map
Ol’ Tessie was all the buzz at Call of Duty NEXT. I guess it helps when you have a real-life replica of the car at your event. Regardless, Ol’ Tessie is not just a gimmick. “We didn’t want to do something on rails in 2025,” said Kevin Drew, Design Director at Treyarch. “So we gave you full control.”
Tessie is your escape, your transport, your mobile Pack-a-Punch, and even your mid-round savior. She’s upgradable, fixable, and even summons back to your location if you get stranded. “You can call her back to the Ashwood Garage, and it’ll warp you right into her,” added Steve Bianchi, Lead Game Designer at Treyarch.
T.E.D.D., your robotic “driver” from TranZit, returns. He has been rebuilt, and is more ungined than ever. The vehicle becomes central to not just traversal, but storytelling, exploration, and combat. It is thoughtfully implemented and handles amazingly.
From Fog to Farm to Hell
The map starts in Janus Towers, where you find the vehicle and begin your escape. From there, you’ll navigate between areas like the Farm and Ashwood. Each has its own survival layout, generators to power, and quest objectives. But it’s not a simple ride.
Between points are dangerous fog zones. Something we learned the hard way during our first playthrough that lasted all of about 5 minutes. These “off-round” areas are filled with constantly spawning enemies that don’t follow the usual round logic. “We wanted to keep players on their toes,” Kevin said. “So if you leave a crawler and go into the fog, it’s not going to save you.”
There are even jump pads (a fan-favorite from Black Ops 6 Zombies map Reckoning) to help players who get left behind or want quicker routes. We didn’t get to experience that in our playthrough, but I am super happy with the inclusion.

New Wonder Weapon: The Necrofluid Gauntlet
Something I noticed during the Zombies reveal trailer was the new Wonder Weapon – the Necrofluid Gauntlet. This claw-like weapon is an alien-tech weapon that can shoot a black fluid through enemies, then suck it back in for ammo. It also grabs power-ups from a distance and does serious melee damage. “The idea was to give players something that adapts to their style,” said Steve. “It’s ammo-efficient, dynamic, and weird as hell – in the best way.”
Also returning: Ray Gun Mark II, available in the Mystery Box alongside the new weapon.
Cursed Mode: Zombies for the Souls Crowd
If you long for the brutality of Black Ops 1 or 2, Cursed Mode is your battleground. There is no minimap, no loadout weapons, and you only get a pistol to start. No hand-holding here. It has that classic BO3-style point system. It’s unrelenting. And that’s the point. “Cursed Mode was near and dear to me,” said Kevin. “It’s our love letter to old-school Zombies players.”

Dead Ops Arcade 4: Back in Black
Dead Ops returns in its “most stacked version” yet:
- 80 levels
- 20+ arenas
- New Slayer Maps
- Silverback Challenges
- Now includes XP toward progression
- Ammo Mods, Field Upgrades, GobbleGums, and first-person mode
If you love the chaotic top-down madness of past entries, this version adds depth and replayability.
Progression That Respects Your Time
Zombies, Campaign, Multiplayer, and even Dead Ops now share unified progression. This is great news for folks who don’t like to waste time. “I’m proud of that,” said Kevin. “It used to feel so separate. We wanted everything you do to feel valuable. Even if you’re playing solo Dead Ops, you’re earning XP.”
That also means solo saves are back. A lifesaver for players who can’t sit through two-hour sessions. “I’ve got a six-month-old at home,” Steve laughed. “Sometimes I need to pause and come back later. Now you can.”
Boss Fights, Balance, and Beta Goals
Treyarch has invested time into balancing the endgame fights. “We don’t want a cakewalk,” Kevin said, “but we also don’t want players hitting a brick wall.”
This year’s beta will include a Zombies Survival Map, which Treyarch will use to tune weapon balance, enemy difficulty, and high-round pacing. The team is also testing new AI behaviors, with zombies being slower but more dangerous in later rounds.
They’re especially listening to feedback around special enemy spam and will tweak accordingly based on how players respond during the beta.
Survival Maps Return
Back for the first time since Black Ops 2, Survival Maps carve specific zones out of the main map (like Farm) and drop players in with minimal gear. Think tight quarters, limited resources, and pure round-based chaos. “They’re stripped-down and fast-paced,” said Kevin. “Perfect for camo grinding, chilling with friends, or just playing classic Zombies with no pressure.”

Ashes is the Evolution Zombies Needed
Much like Black Ops 7’s multiplayer, Ashes of the Damned feels like a great direction for the franchise. The TranZit inspiration is clear, but the execution seems miles ahead, with far more player control, better pacing, smarter flow, and meaningful risk/reward decisions. Whether you’re here for the lore, the round grind, or the chaos, Black Ops 7 Zombies delivers. “I think we finally made the Zombies game we’ve always wanted to make,” said Kevin. “Everything we wanted is in this one. And there’s so much more coming.”
