5 Reasons Death Stranding 2: On the Beach Deserves the Hype

Death Stranding 2: On the Beach Might Be Kojima’s Next Masterpiece

Upon release, Death Stranding received a divisive reception. Some players found themselves captivated by its dense, melancholic atmosphere, while others struggled with the sense of solemn isolation. But over time, appreciation for Kojima-san’s genre-defying vision grew, as players shed their Metal Gear Solid expectations and embraced something entirely unique. With Death Stranding 2: On the Beach poised to crank up the weirdness, here are five reasons you should be excited for the sequel.

1. Kojima Unchained

With MGS V, it was clear to see that Kojima had been restricted. His genius shone through during Act 1, but the disjointed second part stifled it. After ridding himself of Konami’s shackles, he was free to create the masterpiece, Death Stranding. The newfound freedom has led to Kojima announcing three games, expressing his creative freedom in new and exciting ways. While the original walked a bold new path, On the Beach looks to run past its predecessor to deliver an enthralling adventure.

2. A Familiar World, Made Stranger

The Icelandic-inspired environment led to numerous breathtaking moments as you explored the stunning expanse. While the ethos remains the same, the world has evolved with different locations that change the manner in which you investigate and traverse. Although only teased, it’s clear to see that the game is expanding the universe as it leaves America for Mexico and Australia. What lies in these areas? I have no idea, but I’m hyped to find out.

3. A Powerhouse Cast

Kojima’s love for cinema is evident in every release. He tells his stories through extensive cutscenes, a method he’s now elevated with a Hollywood-level cast. While stars like Norman Reedus and Troy Baker return, he’s added Elle Fanning and Luca Marinelli to round off a stacked cast. Although it’s great to have their acting chops within the game, it’s the stories and script that will truly bring out the best of them and that’s where Hideo excels.

4. Improved Gameplay and Pacing

Many struggled with the pacing in the first area of Death Stranding. The slow start, lack of combat and limited forms of traversal were the most common criticisms. Well, the sequel addresses all of these concerns. You are thrown straight into the story, there is more variety with deliveries so that you can head through camps or work your way around them and, as introduced in the director’s cut, more methods to travel. All in all, it appears that On the Beach improves on the foundation established in the original to create a more varied adventure.

5. The Mystery

There are only a handful of true auteurs in the industry, and leading the charge is Hideo Kojima. Each of his releases is a work of art, rich with social commentary, innovation, and groundbreaking storytelling. He often fills his trailers with cryptic clues, inviting fans to theorize and fueling anticipation. The introduction of new characters, along with a clear nod to Metal Gear Solid, has only heightened excitement. While not everyone had the chance to experience the sprawling narrative of the original, the sequel includes a helpful recap, allowing newcomers to jump right in.

Kept You Waiting, Huh?

Death Stranding 2 is shaping up to deliver an outstanding experience that builds on every gameplay element from the original. The new environments look stunning, and each new character brings a unique quirk that’s bound to create memorable narrative moments. While Death Stranding 2 might not be for everyone, in an industry so often afraid to take risks, that might be the best reason to be hyped.
