Teslagrad 2 is a bit of a fail. It has some interesting puzzle platform gameplay, but its Metroidvania elements are too simple. And it feels like there was very little creativity behind any aspect of it.
Cassette Beasts is essentially a Pokémon game, with a late 80s/ early 90s aesthetic. It was designed for those of us that were too old to appreciate the appeal of Pokémon, because we were too old and cool at the time.
On paper, April 2023 wasn’t a crazy good month for video game releases. But there ended up being a lot of really good games. All the biggest releases scored well, usually somewhere in the 75-85 range, with the exception of one.
To be honest, May 2023 is a bit of a lull before the monster month that June 2023 is promising to be. There are still a bunch of awesome games, including one that will likely be a Game of the Year contender.
Trinity Trigger is JRPG comfort food. If you’re a fan of Super Nintendo era action JRPGs, then Trinity Trigger is a must play.
The easiest way to describe Hunt the Night would be The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past with a Castlevania aesthetic. It also happens to be as good as the classic titles from those series’ 16-bit eras.
Curse of the Sea Rats is a Metroidvania, with the gameplay hook that there are 4 playable characters. Combine this with a unique visual aesthetic, and you get one very excited reviewer.
March 2023, like most Spring months, was full of great game releases. COGconnected doesn’t award a lot of 90 or higher reviews, but this month had multiple 90+ games that won’t make it on the Three Best (and Worst) Video Games from March 2023.
April 2023 continues a strong year for video game releases. It’s a strange batch of top titles, because they’re all games from major franchises and developers, but none of them are guaranteed critical darlings.
Assault Suits Valken Declassified is an incredible remaster. Having all the cut material with a new translation is going to be a dream come true for some. The translated guide book, and making of documentary are incredible extras.
