Stealthier, Smoother, Deadlier: Black Flag Resynced Gets the Basics Right

Black Flag Resynced Gets the Basics Right

Assassin’s Creed has always been about the freedom to climb wherever you want and eliminate targets however you choose. As a result, parkour and stealth became defining pillars of the franchise. Over time however, those core mechanics gradually lost some of their importance. With the remake of Black Flag, Ubisoft is looking to make smart, meaningful improvements that enhance the overall experience. But will these changes elevate a beloved classic or risk tarnishing its legacy?

Get Down and Dirty

While stealth has been a large part of the Assassin’s Creed franchise, many basic aspects were not in the earlier games. Previously, you would crouch only when entering greenery, whereas in Resynced, you can crouch at any point. Although only a small detail, it opens up numerous options, creating a more dynamic stealth system. Sneaking is no longer tied to tall grass as you can hide behind market stalls, barrels, and anything else in the world to stay out of your enemy’s gaze.

You Can’t See Me

Ubisoft has introduced several new aspects to improve stealth. In addition to crouching, there’s the visibility meter. Although not a new feature in the franchise, the original was missing this simple mechanic. Instead, the game relied on an awareness gauge, which indicated your presence to certain guards. This method focuses on your general visibility, allowing you to be more methodical than reactive. Other aspects such as the time of day and even weather impact your visibility, massively improving stealth compared to the original.

I Got the Moves

Edward is much more responsive in Resynced, with the ability to easily scale buildings and leap across rooftops. There’s a great flow to his movement which adds a lovely pace to the moment-to-moment gameplay. This fluidity permeates the experience with other small touches such as rolling when hitting the ground from a height, which allows you to maintain pace when sprinting after a target.

It’s the Climb

Advanced Parkour options are available. These new options vastly improve your freedom to scale the Caribbean’s many heights. Introduced in Mirage and Shadows, this gives a deeper level of control so that you can jump when and where you like. Rather than sticking to certain lines, this removes the automatic feel, so that movement is more responsive, deliberate, and entirely your own.

Stealth and parkour are key components in any Assassin’s Creed game. Ubisoft’s approach with Resynced is to preserve and refine, which is exactly what they’ve done. These additions don’t alter the experience but instead enhance it, strengthening the core pillars without compromising their identity and reminding you why this formula still feels so satisfying.
