Dark Queen of Samobor Launched Its Demo and Kickstarter Campaign

Show Some Love and Support for Dark Queen of Samobor

Croatian indie developer Downtown Game Studio has officially launched the Kickstarter campaign for Dark Queen of Samobor, alongside releasing the game’s first public demo on Steam. The demo arrives as part of the ongoing Games from Croatia festival, giving players an early look at the studio’s ambitious new project.

Dark Queen of Samobor is an atmospheric 2.5D side-scrolling adventure rooted deeply in Croatian and Slavic folklore. The game places players inside a living storybook, where they step into the role of a knight venturing into the domain of the mysterious Dark Queen. As the ruler who has plunged the land into darkness, she stands at the center of a tale that blends beauty with an unsettling sense of danger.

Visually, the game draws inspiration from classic Disney animation and dark fantasy films from the 1980s, creating a distinct handcrafted look. Its cinematic camera work enhances storytelling through environmental details and large-scale moments, while combat focuses on hack-and-slash mechanics and axe-throwing reminiscent of modern action titles.

The narrative leans heavily on Slavic mythology and Croatian literary influences, shaping a world that feels both haunting and culturally rich. Players can expect an experience that balances action with a strong sense of atmosphere, often compared to a side-scrolling take on darker mythological adventures.

The demo is now available to play on Steam, with the full release planned for early 2027. Meanwhile, the Kickstarter campaign went live today, June 8. It’s still early days, but this is one to keep an eye on if you enjoy story-driven dark fantasy with a unique cultural twist.
