Hell Wait Unveils Stylish Mahjong Deckbuilding Roguelike for PC

Wishlist Hell Wait Right Now

Solo indie developer Mondbekker has announced Hell Wait, a new roguelike deckbuilder inspired by riichi mahjong that is coming to PC via Steam. The announcement was accompanied by a new trailer showcasing the game’s dark atmosphere and strategic gameplay.

In Hell Wait, players are lured into a deadly series of mahjong matches with the promise of clearing their debts. To survive, players must build strong hands, reach target scores, and avoid costly mistakes during each match. Between rounds, players can use the money they earned to purchase Jokers, Pacts, and Blessings, which provide various gameplay advantages. Jokers improve scoring, Pacts manipulate tiles and suits, while Blessings strengthen yaku combinations.

The game features over 100 Joker tiles that can alter scoring, drawing mechanics, and even the rules of play. Players can also enhance tiles with upgrades like Materials, Stickers, and Dora, while brutal boss matches introduce additional restrictions and challenges. Instead of traditional health, players use “Fingers” as HP, losing one whenever they fall behind or deal into an opponent’s hand.

Although Hell Wait is based on riichi mahjong rules, the game aims to be accessible for newcomers by simplifying some complex mechanics through difficulty settings. Opponents will also reveal which tiles they are waiting on, though they may not always tell the truth.

Hell Wait is currently in development for PC via Steam. A demo is planned for the June Steam Next Fest, with a full release scheduled for later in 2026.
