Bepansrad Studio has officially released Patch 2.0 for its roguelike chess game, Petrified Pawns, delivering a major update that greatly expands content and replayability. To mark the release, the studio is offering a huge 50% discount on Steam until January 21, making this an ideal time to pick up the game.
Patch 2.0 speeds up the experience by introducing quick travel between chessboards, allowing players to move through runs more efficiently without losing strategic depth. The update adds several new playable characters, including the Bear, Cobra, Crossbow, Warlock, and Witch, along with unlockable starting heroes that diversify each playthrough. New maps focus heavily on roguelike design, featuring randomly generated chessboards and obstacles that keep every run fresh and unpredictable.
Players can now equip their units with new weapons and armor while making use of newly added healing spells. Each chess piece archetype brings its own unique abilities, and units automatically cast healing spells when conditions allow. A new level-up system gives players meaningful choices between upgrades, encouraging experimentation and strategic planning.
Petrified Pawns also redefines traditional chess rules to create a more approachable experience. Pieces no longer eliminate each other instantly; instead, they use health bars, which makes combat more forgiving and tactical. Players control unit movement while attacks and healing happen automatically.
After clearing a chessboard, players choose their next path through the castle, weighing tougher encounters against greater rewards as they push toward monsters, giants, powerful bosses, and ultimately the throne.
