From Cathedral to Clutch: Why Cologne Is the Perfect Stage for CS2
If you’ve never been to a live eSports event, let me tell you right now, Cologne Intel Extreme Masters is the one you want to go to. It is the perfect stage for Counter-Strike 2. And if you have been, there’s nothing quite like the insane atmosphere inside LANXESS Arena. Thanks to Intel, this past weekend I got the incredible opportunity to travel and witness the magic of Counter-Strike 2 on the biggest stage there is – IEM Cologne 2025. It’s no wonder they call it the Cathedral of Counter-Strike! Over 18,000 fans yelling at the top of their lungs makes a stadium of 50,000 seem quiet. I wish I were exaggerating.
IEM Cologne 2025 wasn’t just a tournament; it was an intense, bloody brawl between the 6 teams that made it to the playoffs. The MongolZ, Natus Vincere (NAVI), MOUZ, Furia, Team Spirit, and last year’s winners, Team Vitality. If you want to read all about who won it all and how that all went down, check out our IEM Cologne 2025 recap right here.
The Cathedral Lives Up to the Name
So why exactly is Cologne called the Cathedral of Counter-Strike? After witnessing the electric crowd at LANXESS, it all makes sense. It’s basically holy ground. LANXESS Arena is transformed with huge screens, booming audio, amazing stage lighting, and even some pyrotechnics. It essentially becomes a complete tribute to Counter-Strike. It’s loud, electric, and yes, even emotional. From the players’ reactions to the crowds’ collective gasps, cheers, and boos, you feel the palpable tension in every single play. Every single round felt like a match point; each felt like the game was on the line. And that’s not even including the games that went into double or triple overtime. I’m still not entirely convinced there were fewer than 20,000 fans there!

And one of the best parts of the event is the city of Cologne itself. It feels alive. You can walk pretty much anywhere in less than 30 minutes, or take a quick train ride and take in the various sights. From the gorgeous Cologne Cathedral and ancient Roman ruins to the breathtaking Rhine riverfront and Hohenzollern Bridge, Cologne absolutely does not disappoint. And then of course there’s the mouth-watering food. From schnitzels and pretzels to currywurst and potato pancakes, there wasn’t a single thing I tried that wasn’t absolutely fantastic. The desserts were delectable, and the Kölsch beer lives up to the hype. I’m not a beer drinker at all, but there’s just something to be said about a nice crisp Kölsch beer while you’re in Cologne – you can find it in abundance at literally any bar around the city.
Final Score? Cologne Wins
Whether you came for the frags, the food, the beer, or the absolute chaos of it all, IEM Cologne 2025 was peak Counter-Strike. Iconic venue. God-tier plays. Unmatched vibes. And just the right mix of eSports, history, and pretzel-fueled yelling.
So, is it worth coming to Cologne to watch the pros duke it out on the biggest stage there is? A million times, yes. The people are friendly, the food hits every single time, and the vibes are immaculate. IEM Cologne 2025 wasn’t just the best CS2 event of the year—it was a celebration of everything that makes eSports great. Passion, precision, and utter pandemonium all under one roof. It’s history being written in real time—and I was there to witness it all. So if you’re a Counter-Strike fan and you haven’t made the voyage yet, put it at the top of your bucket list. IEM Cologne isn’t just a tournament, it’s THE tournament and an incredibly damn good time!
