See the Wide Open World in Sonic Frontiers Gameplay

Sonic, the Final Frontier

It worked for Elden Ring and Halo: Infinite, so it has to work for Sonic, right? You may know that Sonic Frontiers will be taking Sonic into an open-world setting. Today, we get to see this game in action.

In a gameplay video, courtesy of IGN, we can see wide (and kind of empty) open world of Sonic Frontiers. In this game, Sonic is literally displaced. In an existential way, the gameplay of the 3D Sonic games are also kind of out of place.

Sonic Frontiers

There are familiar traversal moves in Sonic’s gameplay toolbelt. He runs real fast, bounce off those jump pads, grind on rails, run up walls, and run on those booster pads. However, those elements mostly lead Sonic on a very specific path, which is not very conducive with open-world mechanics. The wall-running and ground running do make exploring look fun though.

We get a taste of some of the environmental puzzles the game has to offer. There is a lot of what players can do, but not a whole of things to do. Sonic is in a brand new world, but not a single enemy in sight. That is likely to not be the case for the full game, but this gameplay is not very exciting.

I will say that the world looks beautiful. The fields, forests, and rock faces Sonic can dash around in have a lot of life to them. However, the emptiness of it makes the gameplay look like a tech demo. There is no solid release date for Sonic Frontiers, but you will be able to play it on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch.
