Like in Real Horse Racing, The Appeal of Winning Post 9 Is a Mystery

Horse Armor DLC?

Japan is a wonderful and magical land. It is home to a ton of cultural icons and phenomena that the West adores. The Winning Post series is probably not one of them. We have horse racing here, which is half fake-sport, half gambling, but Japanese publisher Koei Tecmo has made an entire series out of it called Winning Post. This week, they announced Winning Post 9 2021 with a gameplay (?) trailer. Since the series debuted in 1993, only one Winning Post game has been localized in the West in 1995. Anyone surprised? Anyone? Bueller-san?

Winning Post 9

This trailer for Winning Post 9 may leave you wondering where the game is exactly. The camera angles make it look like a cinematic replay of a race instead of one that a player can actually interact with. Chalk it up to a lack of English translation, but I cannot find the game. Do I play as the jockey? Do I play as the horse? Do I play as someone with money on horse No. 4? Do I play? I must be missing something because these games have been selling for the past 27 years.

As uninterested in horse racing and horse racing games as I am, I am also genuinely curious how this game is played. I may never find out though, because it will probably never be localized here. Winning Post 9 will be coming out on March 18th, 2021 for PC, PS4, and Nintendo Switch, exclusively in Japan.

Does anybody know how this game is played?! Let us know in the comments below.
