Day of the Dev Action-Adventure Showcase
The Day of the Dev showcased 17 Indie Games. This was a bit too much to cover in one bite-sized news story, so in this article, this lists the action-adventure games. All of the games were called out for their great combat and visually stunning storytelling. Also, check out the puzzle games and my top picks.
- Ghost Runner: Ghost Runner adds to the list of Polish games receiving praise. Developed by One More Level, it is a first-person platformer set in a post-apocalyptic cyberpunk world. All of humanity lives in a mega tower called Dharma Tower. You play as a heavily armored bodyguard, whose mission is to climb to the top of the tower. Expect to die a lot while playing. It features melee combat with one-hit kills, so it may take several deaths to discover the best strategy to defeat enemies. It will be released later this year on PC, Xbox, and PlayStation.
- Tunche: Leap Game Studios, out of Peru, created Tunche, a beautifully hand-drawn 2D adventure game. The game is based on Amazonian folklore. Each boss is based on a villain from an Amazonian tale. The gameplay preview featured fast melee action with combo attacks, each unique to one of five playable characters. A demo is already available on Steam.
- Shredded Secrets: Released by Girls Make Games, Shredded Secrets is an anti-bullying adventure game set in a school. You play as four different characters, whose lives intertwine. It is designed to build empathy, which would be well suited for middle school ages players.
- Unto the End: This is a cinematic 2D adventure game about a father trying to fight his way back to his family. A unique feature is that there are no loading screens; the game is one giant canvas! The combat requires the player to read and react to their opponents; it is not a button masher. But, it is a strategy game where attacking is not always the best option.
- Grief Helm: This is an intense dueling game that will make you prove your worth through combat. Its combat is designed to be easy to pick up, but difficult to master. You can play with up to four other players online as a team or in a free for all. The campaign can also be played coop with a friend. Enemies and equipment shift run to run, which makes each playthrough a new game. The game will be released August 20th on Steam.
- VoidTrain: If you like interdimensional survival adventure games with a train theme, Nearga Studios has the game for you! In this game, you ride a train through dimensions into different surreal worlds. Each world has different loot that you can collect and an array of enemies from Nazi’s to monsters that look like bugs. I can honestly say that I have never seen a game like this before.
- Dreamscaper: Dreamscaper is an action RPG with an expansive combat system made by Afterburn Studios. You play as a woman that needs to come to terms with her troubled past. During the day, you will explore the world and develop relationships with other characters. But at night, you will literally battle her demons as you uncover lost memories while exploring her dreams. Later this summer, the game will be available for early access on Steam. A more in-depth look at this game can be found here.
- Blasphemous – The Stir of Dawn DLC: The downloadable content was added to give fans exactly what they have been asking for. A new questline was added to True Calvary mode, including new bosses and rewards. A Pentintence system was added that alters the game depending on which Pentintence you choose. The game is also more user-friendly now that the map has been re-designed to allow players to place custom markers and zoom in and out. The ability to quick travel as also added, so you don’t have to walk everywhere on the large map. These are just some of the enhances made to make a great game even better.
