These Games Don’t Just Grow on Trees
Today, Nintendo is going directly to you. Nintendo Direct-less. Normally, big announcements like game reveals, release dates, and stuff like that are reserved for these online events, but this deviates from the trend. Paper Mario: The Origami King has been announced for the Nintendo Switch with a Summer release date. The trailer shows all kinds of cinematic shots of Mario in a strange, new Mushroom Kingdom; even stranger than the normal paper Mushroom Kingdom. We see new characters, combat, and abilities in this announcement trailer.
According to the game’s page on the Nintendo Store, Mario will be taking on King Olly, with the help of his new companion Olivia. King Olly is turning the paper world into an origami world, which actually sounds kind of refreshing. Along with the world, many of its inhabitants also turn into origami, such as Princess Peach. Despite everything being made from paper, the world is very three-dimensional and textured. We also see a glimpse of combat, which is elaborated on by the Japanese Nintendo channel. The trailer ends with a cute Metroid easter egg of Mario wearing Samus’ helmet.
The combat appears to deviate a bit from the regular Paper Mario combat. Battles not take place on a circular battlefield, where different zones can be rotated to line up enemies and create combos. The video is short, but gives us a look into the differentiated combat. Paper Mario: The Origami King will launch on July 17, exclusively on the Nintendo Switch and can be pre-purchased now.
