Sounds Like Assassin’s Creed Is Going to Be a Live Service RPG Series For Now
Ubisoft isn’t interested in making traditional Assassin’s Creed games anymore, according to Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot. Instead, Guillemot says that longtime fans can choose to have the traditional Assassin’s Creed experience in the recent action-RPG entries.
While speaking with GamesIndustry.biz, Guillemot said, “Our goal is to make sure you can have a Unity within an Odyssey. If you want to have a story of 15 hours, you can have it, but you can also have other stories. You live in that world and you pursue what you want to pursue. You have an experience, many Unity-like experiences.”
He also said that the live service aspect of the recent Assassin’s Creed games have provided such long-term profitability that their increasing budgets haven’t necessitated the standard $60 editions costing more in order to make a profit.
Guillemot said that this business model is “sustainable” due to the massive size of Ubisoft’s open worlds and the constant growth of the player base.
“New markets are opening up and games live a lot longer than before,” Guillemot also explained. “So at the moment we see that we can continue to increase the investments because we know we can have a return on investment that can be quite long[-tailed].”
