DayZ, You’re Under Arrest for Possession of Drug Files
Captain America once said, “I thought the punishment usually came after the crime.” Well, we need you now more than ever, Cap. DayZ has just been sentenced to be banned in Australia. The crime: weed. The Classification Board in Australia ruled that DayZ was to no longer be sold in physical form. Soon, it will be pulled from Steam, and Xbox One and PlayStation online stores. This situation reflects the release of Fallout 3 and how its drug use was censored for Australian audiences. What’s odd is that the Board is having DayZ banned for something that is not actually used in the game.
This is where the above quote comes in. Apparently, the cannabis game files have been there for a while, but are not even implemented. They exist, but that’s about it. There is currently no way to access them. Yesterday, developer Bohemia Interactive commented on the situation via the official DayZ Twitter account. “The Australian player base is a big and very important part of our community. At the moment we are looking for the best solution to keep the game on the Australian market and pass the classification according to all regulations.”

The above tweet suggests that the files will likely be removed and replaced with something that the regulations allow; again, like the situation with Fallout 3 where the chem Med-X replaced morphine. Since no one knows the intended purpose of the cannabis, there is no way to know what will be replacing it, or if anything will.
