You Decide Who You Want to Be
There is not too much stand-out information on Elden Ring right now. The big points are that it is being made by Dark Souls developer FromSoftware in collaboration with Game of Thrones creator George R. R. Martin. While Dark Souls and Bloodborne made use of the whole silent hero thing, FromSoftware’s more recent Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice had a much more defined main character. It sounds like FromSoftware is going to return to the way of Dark Souls, in that the Elden Ring character is going to be someone the player can project themselves on, a blank canvas.
With this information in mind, you may be wondering what the role of George R. R. Martin is if the main character is basically a husk. Well, in an interview with IGN, FromSoftware’s president Hidetaka Miyazaki explains what exactly Martin will be doing. Apparently, he will be crafting the world and mythology of said world that the game will be taking place in. This makes a lot of sense because of the world and history Martin created in A Song of Ice and Fire’s Westeros. This preparation runs in the same vein of the Dark Souls mythology where a ton of events and characters define the story before the game even starts.
Miyazaki explains, “By having him write about a time the player isn’t directly involved in, he is free to unleash his creativity in the way he likes. Furthermore, as From Software, we didn’t want to create a more linear and story-driven experience for Elden Ring. Both issues could be solved by having Martin write about the world’s history instead.” No release date yet for Elden Ring. Or anything else George R. R. Martin is writing for that matter…
