The New Combat System Is More Strategic Than Previous Entries!
God of War has a new, more weighty combat system and its developers at Santa Monica Studio have released a new video that explains how it works! Check it out below!
โEvery God of War had a power fantasy when it comes to Kratos, meaning that when they go into fights and you feel really strong, you feel powerful, you feel like you can take them on, you feel like you can take anything on. No matter how small, no matter how big, itโs like โKratos can handle itโ,โ said Jason McDonald, the Lead Gameplay Designer.
โSo for this game, even though we were changing pretty much everything about the combat, we wanted to make sure that Kratos still felt like he was a powerhouse,โ McDonald said.
Cory Barlog, the gameโs Creative Director, said that one of the goals his team had when designing the new combat system was that it wasnโt going to โmimic Dark Soulsโ. However, Barlog said there was an โinteresting loopโ in the gameplay of Dark Souls that the team wanted to capture.
โThatโs when we really started embracing the fact that not all of God of War has to be charge in, hit and sort of wake up after everything is over, right? It just didnโt have that strategic element, that cerebral engagement,โ explained Barlog, โand all of the pieces that we put together throughout development is that [players] have to think as theyโre fighting.โ
COGconnected has recently posted an extensive preview of the game and, we just got to say, this new God of War game is looking pretty good so far!
โThe gameplay, however, is much more subdued in contrast to the frenetic pace of the previous entries,โ wrote the previewโs author Doug Mercer. โAn over the shoulder camera and some assists from your sonโs bow make the battlefield a much different place than it was in Greece.โ
Mercer also described the gameplay as โfun and familiar, but different enough to feel unique.โ
God of War is due to come out next month on April 20th as a PS4 exclusive.
