God of War Devs Explain the New Combat System

The New Combat System Is More Strategic Than Previous Entries!

God of War has a new, more weighty combat system and its developers at Santa Monica Studio have released a new video that explains how it works! Check it out below!

โ€œEvery God of War had a power fantasy when it comes to Kratos, meaning that when they go into fights and you feel really strong, you feel powerful, you feel like you can take them on, you feel like you can take anything on. No matter how small, no matter how big, itโ€™s like โ€˜Kratos can handle itโ€™,โ€ said Jason McDonald, the Lead Gameplay Designer.

โ€œSo for this game, even though we were changing pretty much everything about the combat, we wanted to make sure that Kratos still felt like he was a powerhouse,โ€ McDonald said.

Cory Barlog, the gameโ€™s Creative Director, said that one of the goals his team had when designing the new combat system was that it wasnโ€™t going to โ€œmimic Dark Soulsโ€. However, Barlog said there was an โ€œinteresting loopโ€ in the gameplay of Dark Souls that the team wanted to capture.

โ€œThatโ€™s when we really started embracing the fact that not all of God of War has to be charge in, hit and sort of wake up after everything is over, right? It just didnโ€™t have that strategic element, that cerebral engagement,โ€ explained Barlog, โ€œand all of the pieces that we put together throughout development is that [players] have to think as theyโ€™re fighting.โ€

COGconnected has recently posted an extensive preview of the game and, we just got to say, this new God of War game is looking pretty good so far!

โ€œThe gameplay, however, is much more subdued in contrast to the frenetic pace of the previous entries,โ€ wrote the previewโ€™s author Doug Mercer. โ€œAn over the shoulder camera and some assists from your sonโ€™s bow make the battlefield a much different place than it was in Greece.โ€

Mercer also described the gameplay as โ€œfun and familiar, but different enough to feel unique.โ€

God of War is due to come out next month on April 20th as a PS4 exclusive.
