5 Reasons to be Excited for Sea of Thieves
The time has passed, and with a sigh, we say our final ‘yar,’ hang up our fancy hat and wave goodbye to our fellow pirates. Yes, the closed beta for Sea of Thieves has ended and for the first time in a long time, it feels less like a simple beta test and more like a communal experience. Sea of Thieves may be a few weeks off until release but that will be an agonizing amount of time for those of us who got a chance to experience quite possibly the rebirth of developer Rare, as this create-you-own tale on the high seas looks to dominate our time spent with controller in hand. With that in mind, let’s take a look at the top 5 reasons to be excited for Sea of Thieves.
1. It’s Pretty
How Rare managed to pull it off, I will never understand. The game definitely has its ‘Rare’ feeling: characters, objects, and buildings all have that oddly familiar “lets attempt to make it look like the thing it is but still keep it weirdly shaped” that we have known to love in Rares greatest games: Conkers Bad Fur Day, Donkey Kong 64, Banjo Kazooie etc. This game keeps that style yet is sharp and clean as current gen games should be. If that doesn’t entice you enough, just look at the water; in no game have I ever seen that sheer beauty of water. The physics, the way it roils and reflects the light, it’s unbelievable. I enjoyed sailing entirely because of how gorgeous the world around me was. The art style alone is one of the biggest draws to get this game.
2. Experience Freedom
One of the truths of what it means to be a pirate is ignoring the law and being a free man. Sea of Thieves looks like it’s going to give us that same freedom, where players can boot up the game and decide what they want to do that day regardless of the repercussions – a sailor’s life for me, indeed! You’ll be able to hunt for treasure, attack other pirates, or loiter at the bar and talk to passing players: the game is essentially the vessel for which you can let your inner jolly roger fly. While the final game might offer more specific objectives, the beta gave us the freedom to do as we pleased, as any pirate game should. While some MMOs feel pretty barren following this method, it felt right at home in the beta.
