No Price Change for RiMe’s Physical Version on Switch but Now Includes Download Code for Soundtrack
In an unprecedented move, Grey Box, the publishers of RiMe have announced a nice workaround to Switch’s price parity policy where the physical and digital versions must share the same price. Due to the manufacturing costs of the cartridge, the publishers could not lower RiMe‘s retail version price without suffering a loss. Thus, the internet was not very happy when it learned that the Switch version would have cost $10 more than other versions. Today, Grey Box addressed this tricky situation with a solution that is satisfactory to fans and doesn’t break that Switch price parity policy.
The physical retail version of RiMe on Switch will maintain its $40 price but will come with a download copy of the game’s soundtrack which is valued at $10. However, the digital version of the game will now be $29.99 — on all four platforms. Great news for anyone who was looking forward to playing the Zelda-like adventure game on the Switch.
“The reason for the higher price was due to the additional development, manufacturing, and publishing costs involved with that port. While some were understanding of these go-to-market costs, there were still a number of folks who weren’t happy. We totally understand: nobody wants to pay higher prices,” Grey Box says in that post. “At Grey Box, we are determined to provide a fair deal for everyone around. And so we discussed how we could do that, without simply selling at a loss, all while also being fair to our retail partners.”
Grey Box’s solution will hopefully help future devs who may have to contend with the Switch’s pricing policies.
