Free Game Showdown: August 2015 – Whose Lineup is Better?

Paying for an online service sucks. Like, really. Thankfully, Microsoft and Sony have been adding value every month by giving away free games. But whose free games are best? Let’s take a look at the numbers this month.

Xbox One:

So Many Me ($14.99)

  • Metacritic score: 82

Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes ($19.99)

  • Metacritic score: 76

How to Survive: Storm Warning Edition ($19.99)

  • Metacritic score: 71

Total Value: $44.97

Average Score: 76.3

Ground Zeroes is the big gun for Microsoft this month, and although it is free for X1 players a month later than Ps4-ers, it is perhaps perfectly timed with The Phantom Pain debuting September 1st. So Many Me is this month’s charmer, providing a cute adventure in puzzling, while How to Survive is a mediocre twin stick experience. A decent haul!

PS4:

Limbo ($9.99)

  • Metacritic score: 90 (PS3 version)

Sound Shapes ($14.99)

  • Metacritic score: 84

Stealth Inc. 2: A Game of Clones ($14.99)

  • Metacritic score: 74

Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris ($19.99)

  • Metacritic score: 74

Total Value: $59.96

Average Score: 80.5

A 4 game month for Sony fans including cross-buy games? Sure! Limbo is a must have for those who’ve never experienced its moody atmosphere, while Lara Croft fills in the top down, twin stick category. Stealth Inc 2 and Sound Shapes are both fantastic – providing puzzle-y and intriguing 2D gameplay. Something for everyone in this bunch!

Head 2 Head:

How to Survive v. Lara Croft

Advantage: Sony

So Many Me v. Sound Shapes/Stealth Inc. 2

Advantage: Sony

Ground Zeroes v. Limbo

Advantage: Microsoft

Winner:

To be honest, there’s no loser this month, with great games on both sides of the fence. But, I’ll have to give the nod to Sony this month, with a wealth of quality games to keep gamers happy on a budget. What do you think? Let us know on Twitter!
