An Epic Journey Awaits in Pathos
Contrary Games has announced that Pathos, its turn-based fantasy adventure inspired by classic roguelikes, will officially launch on PC via Steam on November 4, 2026. Before the full release, players will also get a chance to try the game through a demo arriving in the next few weeks.
Inspired by traditional roguelikes such as NetHack, Pathos combines deep, emergent gameplay with modern visuals, sound, and a touch-friendly interface. Players can extensively customise their characters before setting out on procedurally generated adventures where every campaign can unfold differently.
Pathos has been available as a free-to-play game for more than a decade, but the upcoming Steam edition will introduce an enhanced version that gives fans a way to support its continued development. The new edition also brings a long-awaited visual upgrade, drawing inspiration from the look and feel of old book illustrations.
The game’s key art takes inspiration from Struth von Winkelried, a legendary figure from Swiss folklore. According to the tale, Winkelried confronted a dragon alone, using a barbed spear to bring the creature down. However, the dragon’s poisonous blood ultimately caused his death days after his victory. That story seems fitting for the game, where dangerous encounters and unexpected outcomes are part of the adventure.
The Pathos demo will arrive within the next few weeks, with the full game following on November 4. If you’re a fan of classic roguelikes, this one is definitely worth keeping an eye on.
