A Brave Move for Gate Project
Independent developer TestOneDev has announced a major change for Gate Project, revealing that the sci-fi game will now move away from its original 3D real-time strategy (RTS) design and focus on a party-based RPG auto-battler.
The decision follows extensive playtesting, where the new concept reportedly received a much more positive response than the game’s earlier direct-control RTS approach. Instead of requiring players to constantly micromanage their units, Gate Project will put more emphasis on squad composition, equipment, unit synergies, and strategic decision-making.
The game will also feature a streamlined exploration system using a mix of 2D and 3D environments. Players will travel across distant planets and orbital locations, sending expedition squads through space gates to uncover alien artifacts, resources, and advanced technology.
While the gameplay direction has changed, TestOneDev says the game’s existing universe and narrative will remain intact. Players will continue to lead a multinational initiative tasked with exploring distant star systems and uncovering the secrets surrounding the mysterious gate network. Between expeditions, players can return to their base to research alien technology, craft specialized equipment, and improve their squad members.
TestOneDev also noted that the original RTS elements could eventually return in a separate project. For now, however, the developer believes this new direction gives Gate Project a stronger path toward its planned 2026 release.
It looks like this change could give Gate Project a much more focused identity, especially for players who enjoy squad building and RPG progression.
