ONTOS Gameplay Reveal Shows a Twisted Experiment You Won’t Forget

Take a Closer Look at ONTOS

Frictional Games and Kepler Interactive have given fans a fresh look at their upcoming sci-fi mystery thriller ONTOS during gamescom Opening Night Live. The new gameplay footage offers a disturbing glimpse into the strange world players will explore when the game launches for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S in 2027.

In ONTOS, players take on the role of Aditi as she explores Samsara, a repurposed hotel located on the moon. Along the way, she will encounter bizarre Experiments and unsettling situations that force players to make difficult moral choices.

The latest gameplay trailer introduces Crombie, a scientist who came to Samsara searching for answers about what makes each person unique. His experiments have taken a horrifying turn, with his mind apparently uploaded to a server powered by a network of interconnected rats. The machine urges Aditi to reconnect it with its physical body, but the body itself desperately begs her to stop.

Players will need to explore the environment, uncover clues, and decide what to do next. There is no single correct solution, as ONTOS lets players’ own morality shape Aditi’s journey.

Fans attending gamescom this week can also get a closer look at Hall 10.1. Visitors can see a recreation of the iconic rat server Experiment. They can also interact with scientists at the booth and put their morality to the test through a series of thought experiments and scenarios inspired by the game.

ONTOS is being developed as a spiritual successor to Frictional Games’ acclaimed SOMA and features Golden Globe winner and Academy Award nominee Stellan Skarsgård.

With its unsettling experiments and focus on meaningful choices, ONTOS is shaping up to be another fascinating psychological experience from Frictional Games. Fans will have to wait until 2027 to see where Aditi’s journey leads.
