A Frozen Hell Awaits in Invariant
Invariant has officially been re-announced, bringing fresh attention to a chilling survival horror FPS set deep within Antarctica. Developed by Josip Makjanić, a former level designer known for his work on Serious Sam, the game places players inside a remote research facility where a catastrophic event has left everything in disarray. Currently in development for PC, including both Windows and Linux, the project is now moving forward with full production underway.
Drawing clear inspiration from genre-defining classics such as F.E.A.R., Half-Life, the original Resident Evil series, and John Carpenter’s The Thing, Invariant blends atmospheric exploration with puzzle-solving and intense combat. The game builds isolation, tension, and a constant sense of danger as it traps you in a hostile environment.
“I want to build the kind of game I grew up with. One that respects the player’s intelligence and their time. Not a spiritual sequel to anything. Something entirely its own, made with full creative control and genuine care for every detail.” – Josip Makjanić, Developer, Faros Game Studio
One of the more notable updates is the shift in development from Unity to the Godot engine. This move highlights the developer’s focus on long-term preservation, modding capabilities, and physical releases. As well as giving players greater ownership over their experience. With funding now secured, the game has entered a more advanced stage of development.
Invariant is shaping up to be a promising return to classic survival horror design. It promises to deliver an experience that combines old-school inspiration with modern development priorities. As production continues, it stands as a project worth keeping an eye on for fans of the genre.
