Escape the Prison in Project Breakout
The solo indie developer maxkerpen has announced that Project Breakout, a sandbox-style prison escape game, will launch on Steam on April 15, 2026.
In the game, players step inside a highly secured prison facility, either alone or with up to three friends in co-op. From there, the goal is simple in concept but open in execution: escape by any means possible. Players can explore the environment, interact with other inmates, gather useful materials, and craft tools that aid in their breakout attempt. Training different attributes also plays a role, allowing for more creative and effective escape strategies over time.
The experience leans heavily into player freedom. Rather than guiding players through a fixed path, the game encourages experimentation. There is no single solution to escaping, and failure is part of the journey. Trying different approaches, learning from mistakes, and gradually refining a plan is at the heart of the gameplay loop.
Replayability is further expanded through full Steam Workshop support. Players will be able to design and share their own custom prison layouts, introducing new challenges and scenarios for the community to tackle.
According to the developer, the game draws inspiration from titles like The Escapists 2 and Prison Architect, while placing a stronger emphasis on open-ended solutions and player creativity.
With its flexible design and co-op focus, Project Breakout looks set to offer a fresh take on the prison escape genre when it arrives this week.
