Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 Update Lowers File Size but Causes Trouble for Players

A Drastic Change for Call of Duty: Black Ops 6

File optimization has become a major focus for developers of large games, and Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 is the latest to see a significant size reduction. The newest update, Version 1.080, went live this week and dramatically cut the game’s footprint, though not without some unexpected problems for players.

On top is the Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 file size before the update, and the new file size is shown below.

One GameSpot staff member noted that their installation dropped from 222.1 GB to 122.8 GB after the update, freeing up nearly 100 GB of space. While this is welcome news for players running out of room on consoles, others have reported more troubling outcomes. According to multiple posts on Reddit, the update seemingly removed the game entirely, leaving only the Call of Duty HQ launcher behind.

Players can reinstall Black Ops 6 along with content packs and multiplayer features. But the process may inconvenience those who have purchased and downloaded large amounts of additional content. Each account also seems to save a different amount of storage space depending on how much extra content it holds.

Alongside the file adjustments, the update introduced several improvements. Players can expect bug fixes, balance updates, and even new content, including a fresh multiplayer map and the Reckoning Directed mode for zombies. These additions are designed to keep the experience engaging as the game approaches the end of its life cycle.

The update comes at a time when the community is already voicing concerns. Fans recently learned that the Carry Forward system, which allowed weapon and operator skins from Black Ops 6 to transfer forward, will not apply to the upcoming Black Ops 7. With the next installment scheduled to release on November 14 for Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC, Black Ops 6 appears to be winding down as attention shifts to the franchise’s future.
