Assemble Your Team for Call of Duty: Black Ops 7
Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 is making a bold change to its single-player campaign. Unlike past entries in the series, players will not be able to select a difficulty level. Instead, the challenge is built directly into the game’s design. Associate creative director Miles Leslie explained that this shift comes from the campaign’s focus on both solo and cooperative play.
“We’ve built it for solo or four-player squads as well. You cannot pick a difficulty like past games. We’ve baked it in because you have to approach a co-op campaign differently, and we wanted to make sure the missions felt right for solo players,” Leslie told IGN.

While longtime fans may miss choosing between Recruit, Hardened, or Veteran modes, Leslie reassured solo players that they are not being left behind. Black Ops 7’s campaign was crafted as a “social experience”. It features a scaling system that adjusts difficulty when more players join. According to Leslie, the goal is to ensure missions remain engaging and challenging for groups of two, three, or four players without becoming unbalanced.
Another major shift is how progression works across modes. Campaign XP will now carry over to multiplayer, Zombies, and Warzone, creating a more unified experience across the game. The campaign will also conclude with “Avalon Endgame,” a new replayable mission described as a high-stakes survival challenge. Here, squads must adapt under pressure and push the limits of what a Black Ops story can be.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 launches November 14, with a multiplayer beta scheduled for October. It will be available on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC, as well as Xbox Game Pass. If you want to find out more about the game, check our preview right here.
