Caput Mortum Is Bringing Its Horror on Steam Later This Month

Get Ready to Immerse in Caput Mortum

Black Lantern Collective and WildArts Games have officially announced the release date for Caput Mortum, set to arrive on Steam on August 27, 2025. This indie psychological horror adventure takes inspiration from King’s Field and Amnesia: The Dark Descent, drawing players into a chilling descent through an abandoned 16th-century alchemist’s tower hidden deep in the French countryside.

Caput Mortum

In Caput Mortum, players face a world of unsettling secrets and deathly encounters, all while navigating an unusual control scheme designed to heighten tension. The game strongly encourages the use of a controller, even offering a special setting modeled after the button layout of FromSoftware’s 1994 classic King’s Field. For those seeking a different type of challenge, a keyboard-only mode emphasizes vulnerability, while a keyboard and mouse option provides a more traditional setup.

The design of the game emphasizes atmosphere, mystery, and a sense of constant unease. Players must stay alert as they search for fragments of forbidden knowledge, uncovering what lies within the tower’s shadowed corridors. Each choice in control style changes how players experience fear, with every encounter testing both nerves and patience.

“Caput Mortum was inspired by my first time playing King’s Field 4 and the anxiety that comes with getting familiar with a game’s control scheme in a hostile environment,” said Gabriel B. Dufour, Art Director at WildArts Games. “I also took inspiration from Amnesia: The Dark Descent when thinking about the monster encounters and puzzles. I hope fans of these classic games find something familiar to love in Caput Mortum, but that doesn’t mean there won’t be surprises.”

With its haunting setting and a dedication to old-school horror design, Caput Mortum looks to offer a disturbing yet nostalgic journey when it arrives this August.
