Sub-Verge places players deep underwater, in a sinking submersible where survival hinges not on weapons or quick reflexes, but on conversation. Developed by Zach Dodson, known for his work with Featherproof Books and the illuminated novel Bats of the Republic, this marks his first foray into video games. “Storytelling in the interactive space opens up a whole new puzzle,” Dodson says. “One that is difficult and rewarding both.”
At the heart of Sub-Verge is a silent protagonist navigating fraught relationships among a stranded crew of deep-sea divers. Dialogue isn’t just a narrative layer; it’s the core gameplay mechanic. Players offer “handles” to other characters, strategic prompts that influence how events unfold. The results depend on emotional insight as much as logical sequencing.
The game explores timely themes of isolation, trust, and the pressures of group survival. As tensions rise, players must question whether it’s better to help outsiders or protect the fragile bonds within a threatened group. These choices aren’t made through menus or moral meters; they emerge through the nuance of interaction.
In Sub-Verge, words are tools, choices, and lifelines. The experience challenges traditional narrative structures, inviting players to think, feel, and listen closely. It’s not just about escaping a submerged vessel. It’s about understanding what keeps people connected when everything else is falling apart.
