Exclusivity, Price, and Exceptional Performance Propel Spider-Man 2 to the Pinnacle of October’s Best-Selling Games
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, swinging into action at the close of October, has not only earned critical acclaim but has also secured its place as the No. 1 best-selling game in the US for the month, surpassing its predecessor’s debut in 2018. According to Circana, the company formerly known as NPD, the sequel achieved launch-month sales that outperformed the original by a notable double-digit percentage, showcasing the enduring popularity of the web-slinging superhero.
Despite launching later in the month on October 20, Spider-Man 2 managed to surpass the sales of the 2018 installment, which had a head start with its September 7 release. Notably, Spider-Man 2 is exclusive to PS5, while its predecessor debuted on PS4, contributing to its impressive performance despite the smaller current install base of the PS5.
Mat Piscatella from Circana highlighted another contributing factor to Spider-Man 2’s success—the game’s launch price of $70 compared to the original’s $60. This difference in pricing significantly influenced the overall revenue generated by the title.
While specific sales numbers were not provided by Circana, Sony reported that Spider-Man 2 sold 2.5 million copies globally within its first 24 hours and reached 5 million copies after just 11 days.
After merely one month on the market, Spider-Man 2 has already secured its place as the No. 4 best-selling game in the US for 2023, trailing behind Madden NFL 24, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, and Hogwarts Legacy. The game surpassed other October newcomers, including Super Mario Bros. Wonder and Assassin’s Creed: Mirage, to claim its position at the top of the charts.
