The knock-out stage of the 2022 Davis Cup is scheduled for Malaga in November, following the conclusion of the group stage, which was held across four European cities in September.
The remaining teams include current and former world number ones, up and coming names, and some leading doubles’ specialists.
So, whether you’re watching for fun or want to enjoy the best tennis betting experience, here is a look at the teams still in contention for the men’s 2022 Davis Cup.
Italy
Italy won in 1976 and finished runner-up on six occasions. The team has not progressed beyond the group stage in its two previous Davis Cup appearances. However, the 2022 team is headed by Matteo Berrettini and Jannik Sinner, both top 20 players, and includes Fabio Fognini, Lorenzo Musetti and Simone Bolelli.
USA
The USA will be hoping to return to its former glory, which includes winning the first Davis Cup in 1900. In 2019, the team failed to reach the knock-out stages, and in 2021 lost both of its group ties. However, the current line-up includes American number one and top 10 player Taylor Fritz, as well as Frances Tiafoe, Tommy Paul and doubles specialist Jack Sock.
Germany
Germany finished top of the group and will be hoping to emulate its 1993 success, when it lifted the Davis Cup. The country also enjoyed success in 1988 and 1989. While lacking the marquee names of some other teams, there is plenty of depth, with Oscar Otte, Jan-Lennard Struff and Yannick Hanfmann, plus doubles specialists Tim PĂĽtz and Kevin Krawietz.
Canada
Canada has never won, but came close in 2019, finishing runner-up to Spain. In 2021, the Canadians failed to make it past the group stage. But 2022 might just be Canada’s year. The team includes top 10 player Félix Auger-Aliassime, plus Denis Shapovalov, Vasek Pospisil, Alexis Galarneau, and Gabriel Diallo.
Australia
Australia will be hoping to continue its impressive Davis Cup pedigree. The team is the second most successful of all time, winning most recently in 2003. The 2022 line-up is headed by Alex de Minaur and includes Thanasi Kokkinakis, as well as doubles specialists Matthew Ebden and Max Purcell, who together won the 2022 Wimbledon men’s doubles title.
Netherlands
The Netherlands might pull off a surprise in the 2022 Davis Cup finals, having unexpectedly finished top of the group, which included Great Britain and the USA. The Dutch have never won the Davis Cup but reached the semi-finals in 2001. The team includes Netherlands’ number one, Botic van de Zandschulp, with Tallon Griekspoor and Tim van Rijthoven, and doubles specialists Wesley Koolhof and Matwé Middelkoop.
Spain
Spain boasts an impressive Davis Cup history, winning six times, most recently in 2019, when a new format for the competition was introduced. The strong 2022 team doesn’t feature Rafael Nadal but it is headed by the recently crowned ATP world number one, Carlos Alcaraz. It also includes Pablo Carreño Busta, Roberto Bautista Agut and Marcel Granollers.
Croatia
Finally, Croatia must be considered a contender, winning in 2018 and finishing runner-up in 2016 and 2021. In 2005, it became the first unseeded nation to win. The 2022 team includes Marin Cilic, Borna Coric and Borna Gojo, as well as two former world doubles number ones, Mate Pavic and Nikola Mektic.
