It’s Getting Hot In Here
For a lot of people, gaming is not just a hobby. It is a form of escapism. Take some time out of your day to get away from your job, school, the outside world, all your responsibilities. If you game to get away from the Earth’s existential crisis, too bad. Riders Republic is not going to let you escape climate change.
At some point over the next year or so, players logging in to Riders Republic will be faced with an in-game crisis. Without any warning, the game will one day have an orange sky and trees set ablaze. Your character will be wearing a gas mask and major sections of the map will be closed off due to the dangers of wildfires.
Players will be able to reduce the spread of the wildfires through a “short and intense live event”. The idea is to highlight the consequences of climate change without placing blame and pointing fingers.
We will not know until it happens, but we have to wonder if any in-game messaging about climate change will spark any grassroots activism within the gaming community. Ubisoft, EA, and Activision have begun regularly reporting their emissions. They also have spoken out against climate change as a threat to their businesses.
When Skull and Bones comes out, the game will have a similar in-game event focused on the consequences of over-fishing. Riders Republic is available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Stadia.
