PlayStation 5 Receiving PlayStation Tournaments 2022

Tourney Time

PlayStation is already outlining a big year for themselves. The announcement of the PSVR2 is already some massive news. Yet, there is more. Jim Ryan, President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, gave a presentation at CES 2022 highlighting the new features coming to PlayStation. Including, the introduction of a tournament feature to the PS5.

“We’re also planning to introduce a new Tournaments feature on PS5.” Says Ryan in his speech for the PlayStation showcase at CES 2022.

PlayStation tournaments originally launched on PS4 in 2016. They arrived as a collaboration with ESports organizer ESL Gaming. Thus, the collaboration allowed players to make money through organized competitions in a professional format. Additionally, from the partnership between PlayStation and ESL Gaming, prizes that included PlayStation merchandise and gear for prizes were earned.

Amidst a host of new features and announcements Ryan introduced in his speech was the tournament feature for the PS5. The excitement around the feature the PS5 may be new, but the planning for it is old. According to PlayStation Universe, Sony filed a patent for online tournament integration, specifically for the PS5, last Summer.

Consequently the feature will allow PSN to generate tournaments without a game needing a competitive mode implemented. Essentially, every game can become a part of ongoing competitive scenes even if the game itself lacks a ranked game mode. Additionally this will, most likely, open newer games up to a competitive scene they may be lacking from otherwise.

Are you excited for tournaments to arrive on the PlayStation 5? What game would you want to see get tournament attention?
