Despite a Bumpy Release, Cyberpunk 2077 Had a Successful Year
Yesterday, Steam announced their Best of Steam 2021. This highlighted the top sellers, new releases, most-played games, best of VR and more. Although technically released at the end of 2020, the infamous Cyberpunk 2077 managed to make the list in a couple of categories.
CD Projekt’s much anticipated action RPG was released following a lot of hype and fanfare. However, fans quickly turned on the game after a host of awful glitches ruined then game’s release, even resulting in the game to be pulled from the PlayStation store.
To make matters worse, a data breach saw the game’s source code held for ransom along with The Witcher 3. However, while enduring countless necessary updates, the game apparently kept chugging along on Steam thanks to a very patient audience.
Despite all of this mess, Cyberpunk 2077 somehow managed to become one of 2021’s most played games. Steam determines its most played games by highest peak concurrent players, and Cyberpunk 2077 surpassed 200,000 peak players over the last year.
In addition, it was among Steam’s top selling games, cracking Steam’s third category, Silver. Steam measured top sellers by gross revenue, with titles featuring major DLC expansions topping the list.
While they have surpassed these numbers, it is unclear exactly how well Cyberpunk 2077 has performed. Steam has not specified specific statistics for any game in their lists.
Moreover, it is not clear what the game’s user retention is We know that a bunch of people bought and played the game, but how long did they play it for? And what is the average player’s opinion?
Regardless, it is clear that Cyberpunk 2077 managed to become one of 2021’s biggest video games despite its rough entrance last December. Share your thoughts on the game in the comments below or on social media.
