Chocobo Racing
Square Enix has announced that Chocobo GP is a kart racer coming to the Nintendo Switch in 2022. They claim it is set in the Chocobo universe and I don’t know what that means or how it isn’t the Final Fantasy universe. The game Chocobos come from. I don’t have it in me to argue with Square Enix here.
Here are some key features:
- Various game modes – Play various modes including Story and Custom Races. Also enjoy exciting survival races in a bracket-style tournament, which can support up to 64 players. Select modes support online and/or local multiplayer.
- Thrilling courses – Race through various courses taking inspiration from the Chocobo and FINAL FANTASY series, including Cid’s Test Track, the streets of Alexandria and Zozo and the Gold Saucer.
- Roster of Beloved Characters – Players can choose from a wide selection of Chocobo series characters.
- Magical magicite – By collecting magicite, found within Magic Eggs scattered around the various tracks, racers will be imbued with magic, such as Fire or Aero, which can be used against their fellow racers to give them a competitive edge and speed to the finish.
From the trailer, this looks like a fun time. It has a real chance to do something since Nintendo doesn’t seem to have any interest in releasing Mario Kart 9, so people have played 8 to death. If you were going to release a Kart racer, now is as good a time as any.
I’m interested to see the final cast of characters, items, and tracklist. Using magic is interesting, but I think it will work like items, so it depends on what you can do by picking up Magic Eggs. I also don’t like that they are called Magic Eggs because that brings forth a lot of questions that I don’t think Square Enix is going to answer here and, as a casual Final Fantasy fan, I don’t know the answer to.
