The long-running, side-scroller, space shooter R-Type is back. Over the course of the series’ 34 years, there have been six main series titles and a few spin-offs. The newest and upcoming entry R-Type Final 2 is slated for release this year. In April 2019, developer Granzella announced that they would be developing and crowdfunding the game, and after two years and almost $1,000,000 in funds later, R-Type Final 2 will be coming out around the world. This is the first main series game in 17 years. While backers from their Kickstarter will be getting their own bonuses, the publisher NIS America is selling a pretty cool Limited Edition too.
The Limited Edition comes with an on-disc soundtrack, a softcover artbook, a sweet “33rd Anniversary Pilot Tag”, and a metal model of the Earth R-9A ship. All of this and a physical copy of the game comes in a nice collector’s box. Some of the higher tier Kickstarter rewards include in-game shout-outs to backers, but at least this Limited Edition won’t have you spending thousands of dollars. If you are a hardcore fan of the R-Type series, you can get this bundle for $85 plus shipping, but there is only about a third of its stock left, so don’t sit on it.
R-Type Final 2 will be coming out in Japan on April 29th and then in the rest of the world on April 30th. R-Type Final 2 will be out on PC, PS4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and Nintendo Switch.
