Nintendo Details the Plot of Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury

Bowser’s Evil. What’s New?

Last week, Nintendo showed us a new trailer for Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury. It largely focused on the new part of the 2013 Wii U game, Bowser’s Fury. In this new trailer, we saw something a little unexpected. Apparently, Mario will be facing off against Bowser, but with the help of his offspring, Bowser Jr.. An unlikely duo, but this is intriguing. Characters in the Mario-verse come together to form unlikely teams for things like tennis, soccer, the Olympics, and parties, but in this game it is kind of strange. Nintendo tells us why.

On the Nintendo UK site, they reveal the basic plot of the game. “Something bad has happened to Bowser. He’s been tainted by a mysterious black goop, turning him into a humongous monster bent on total destruction! It’s up to Mario and an unlikely companion [Bowser Jr.] to travel across a series of islands on Lake Lapcat, collect the mysterious Cat Shines by completing different platforming challenges, and harness their power to stop the terrifying Fury Bowser.” So, Bowser’s extra evil? Okay, I mean, kidnapping Princess Peach many times over and somehow spawning Bowser Jr. was pretty bad, but now he’s literally big and bad? Sure, let’s go with it.

Judging by the new trailer, the face off between giant cat Mario and giant Bowser looks pretty sweet. It looks a lot like a Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers episode where Rita Repulsa embiggin’s a monster to fight the Mega Zord. Our suspicions were correct that Bowser Jr. will be an AI companion that can be controlled by a local co-op partner. Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury will be out exclusively on Nintendo Switch on February 12th.
