Keep up Hope, PS5 Players
It’s not uncommon for a company to purchase a games developer. In fact, it happens all the time, but the acquisition of Bethesda by Microsoft still came as a big shock to the gaming community, and has led to speculation that PlayStation will themselves seek to acquire a big-name developer, like Square Enix, or even one that’s fallen out of the limelight, like Konami. Given that exclusives will likely always continue to be a thing – much as it might irk a player to need to buy a new console for one specific title – the thought of missing out on Bethesda’s catalogue, which has hits like Dishonored, The Elder Scrolls, or the Fallout series, is a big deal.
Still, it looks like there’s still reason to hope, as it isn’t just the upcoming PS5 exclusive Deathloop which will still be appearing outside of the Xbox, as Xbox CFO Tim Stuart that Bethesda’s games will still be available on other platforms, albeit with caveats.
“What we’ll do in the long run is we don’t have intentions of just pulling all of Bethesda content out of Sony or Nintendo or otherwise, but what we want is we want that content, in the long run, to be either first or better or best or pick your differentiated experience, on our platforms. We will want Bethesda content to show up the best as — on our platforms.”
In short, you’ll still be able to access most, if not all of Bethesda’s future games elsewhere, but whether it’s through timed exclusivity or bonus content on the Xbox, they’re aiming to be the first choice to play future Bethesda games on.
