Super Mario 3D All Stars Brings Some Classic Games to the Switch

Get Ready to Explore Three Old Worlds

Mario has come a long way from rescuing his girlfriend Pauline from the ape he abused. Decades later, despite saving the world multiple times and being in a relationship with a literal princess, Mario is still inexplicably a plumber- albeit one that for some reason seems to be called to action on any given tuesday.

Still, the simple mechanics and varied gameplay have made Mario one of the biggest gaming franchises out there, appearing in everything from sports games, sidescrolling platformers, RPG’s, and even survival horror. Still, he’s best known for starring in platform games, and the new collection is showcasing three of the best.

The first game in the collection is Super Mario 64, the first game in the series to introduce 3D gameplay, which sees Mario rescuing Peach after her castle is taken over by Bowser. Second is Super Mario Sunshine, which sees Mario and Peach take a well-earned vacation only to be falsely accused of vandalism and kidnapped, respectively. Rounding up the collection is Super Mario Galaxy, which sees Mario lost in space after Bowser, once again, kidnaps Princess Peach.

Formulaic, sure, but where each game stands out is the different mechanics. While each feature different areas and complex platforming, Sunshine features a back-mounted hose which can clean graffiti, let him hover, or let him move at super speeds. Galaxy meanwhile features planetoids each with their own centres of gravity, so while one planet could have almost traditional gameplay another may be small enough to run around and catch your enemies by surprise.

The collection launches on September 18th, so if you’re looking for a new game or just looking to replay some old ones, this might just be what you’re looking for.
