State of Play Confirms Spelunky 2 Comes out Next Month

We’ll Have to Dig for a PC Release Date

Spelunky’s sequel is almost at hand. This month’s State of Play has brought us news of its release, at least for the PS4. In a trailer/message from the developer, Spelunky 2 will be more of the same, plus an even deeper experience. Pun intended. From what the trailer shows, Spelunky 2 expands on the first game in nearly every way to create a richer experience overall. You will only have to wait another month or so for this roguelike game.

Spelunky 2

Starting at a broader scope, Spelunky 2 will apparently have a community-building aspect to it. In the original game, the spelunker could rescue damsels, or vice-versa. In Spelunky 2, rescuing people from caves and other traps will get them a spot in your hub world community. It appears that some, if not all, characters can be playable once they are rescued. A major stop for resources in the first game were the shops, where you could buy items or try to steal them. These types of shops are back, but there are new kinds of shops, such as a luck-based shop.

A big improvement that Spelunky 2 will have over the first game is that the co-op will be much more friendly. By that, I mean online multiplayer will be implemented instead of just local multiplayer. It is not known if cross-play will be explored or not however. Spelunky 2 will be coming out on September 15th for PS4, but its PC release is still unknown. As of right now, there is not even a Steam page for the game.
