No Man’s Sky Desolation Update Gets Pretty Dead Space-y

Part Flood, Part Necromorph

No Man’s Sky is one of the greatest comeback stories in gaming. It saw the highest of highs building up to its release and then the lowest of lows when players realized that it was not the messianic game they thought it would be. Since then, No Man’s Sky has been crawling and clawing its way back into the favor of gamers, and it has paid off. The various updates it has received have really improved the game immensely and has helped make it a pretty unique space exploration game. The natural direction to go from here is horror apparently. Thus, No Man’s Sky Desolation update.

No Man's Sky Desolation Update

The Desolation update is playing on the space-horror element of sci-fi like Alien, Dead Space, and Halo has done before, but it is still welcome in No Man’s Sky. The horrors in this update can be found when exploring abandoned freighters adrift in space. When players enter, they will find the ships infested with out of control growths and slime pockets and pouches, a lot like in Dead Space and Halo. However, in this game, the reward is not just survival; though there is an abundance of danger in these abandoned freighters, a lot of useful stuff can be found there too.

The trailer for this update shows the kind of dangers players will encounter aboard these freighters. Hostile creatures infest the ships, as well as incubate in various growths and pouches. There also appear to be different mechanical threats around the ship. The trailers shows off different instances where the ship scans the area with orange lasers, and if gaming has taught me anything, it’s that you do not want to get scanned. No Man’s Sky is out now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
