What We Can Expect to See in the Battlefield 5 Summer Update

One Last Hurrah

Last month it was announced that Dice would stop updating Battlefield V in terms of new DLC and expansions. This was a massive outrage to a lot of fans as they were originally promised that Battlefield V would be treated as a live service with a steady and reliable stream of content. Dice justified their controversial decision by claiming that this was done in order to focus on the next Battlefield game that is set to release sometime next year. While this news was very disappointing to many fans, there is still one more update for Battlefield V in June.

There is no clear timeline for when the Summer Update is going to go live. It was originally meant to launch today but due to the protests, riots, and general turmoil over the death of George Floyd, it has been delayed. It is still expected that we will see an update at least sometime this month. However, we do know what will be waiting for us when this update releases.

Fans can expect to see two new maps called Al Marj Encampment and Provence. Al Marj is going to be featured in North Africa while Provence will take place in France. This should not be too much of a surprise judging by the names. Both maps are going to be the USA vs Germany. Nine new weapons are on their way as well. Here is a shortlist below. Some of these weapons should sound familiar to those who have played previous Battlefield titles as well as any other WWII shooter.

  • Sjögren Shotgun (Support)
  • Chauchat (Support)
  • M3 Infrared (Recon)
  • K31/43 (Recon)
  • Welgun (Medic)
  • M1941 Johnson (Assault)
  • PPK/PPK Suppressed (all classes)
  • M1911 Suppressed (all classes)
  • Welrod (all classes)

Lastly, there is going to be a ton of new vehicles added. Mostly to the American side. As you will see, most of the new vehicles are aircraft. Expect to see aerial combat play a larger role in games. This could also mean that the new maps which are being introduced are going to be larger than normal. This could serve as a sort of nod to longtime fans of the more open and classic style of Battlefield maps.

  • A-20 bomber (U.S. Faction)
  • P-70 Night Fighter (U.S. Faction)
  • P-51D fighter plane (U.S. Faction)
  • P-51K fighter plane (U.S. Faction)
  • M8 Greyhound (U.S. Faction)
  • Puma Armored Car (German Faction

There are many more tweaks and fixes that are in this massive update. If you want to read about everything that is getting switched around, you can find that information here.

Despite Battlefield V not exactly living up to expectations, there is no denying that it certainly started to turn a corner as it aged. Sadly we will never know what could have been due to Dice pulling the plug earlier than expected. All Battlefield fans can do now is enjoy what we have. At the very least, the final update is something to look forward to.
