Friends Only
Although pretty much gamers of every age play Minecraft, it is kind of aimed toward a younger demographic. Them’s just facts. And it looks like the upcoming Minecraft spin-off will include features that intend to keep it that way. In Minecraft, you don’t want just any Steve joining your game and ruining your home; they’ll wreck the place. A similar safeguard is put in place in Minecraft Dungeons online multiplayer, but for a different reason. Instead of protecting your homestead, your team morale will be the subject of protection. Since Minecraft Dungeons is at its core a co-operative game, there will be no online matchmaking.
The game’s FAQ has outright said that there will be no online matchmaking. “Minecraft Dungeons is designed to be played together with your friends – either on a comfy couch or in a comfy online session.” This is meant to proactively address any conflicts between players in a game that may arise from splitting loot or overall online conduct. So hopefully, it’s your friends that aren’t jerks. Other multiplayer concerns that are addressed include cross-play. At launch, you will only be able to play local co-op and online co-op on the same platform. Cross-play is a goal of Mojang’s to implement later.
Minecraft Dungeons was delayed for a little while due to the COVID-10 crisis, but is going ahead with a May 26th release date. Minecraft Dungeons will be available on PC, Xbox One, PS4, and Nintendo Switch.
